(Ski) Slopes in Space

We drew inspiration for our project from rotating space cities with vertically ascending horizons, particularly the Stanford Torus. As interior illustrations of these proposed cities tend to favor perpetual summers, we highlight an artwork here that focuses instead on what a relatively compact torus designed for recreational winter sports might look like.

The twisted torus shape that we highlight evokes “ski slopes in space.” These slopes would crisscross the imaginary line along the inner surface of the rotating torus in space where artificial gravity is strongest, generating interesting terrain for skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. Gravity gradients within the torus’ would make winter sports even more fascinating for participants, and artificial skies would ideally augment the experience.

To keep the slopes relatively clear of obstacles, we envision lodgings for vacationers extending from the outer surface of the torus into the surrounding space. This would give vacationers clear views of the stars when they leave the torus’ interior region and accommodations in artistic buildings oriented at different angles with respect to its artificial gravity.
