Enhanced City Roam
A Tour Into the Urban Soundscape
This project aims to augment the walking experience in the city. Focusing on the city's ambient sound aspect, it seeks to digitally visualize ambient sounds, amplify people's attention to the details of sounds with imaginative interpretations, and bring an enhanced urban walking experience through this immersive activity.
We choose the area surrounding Boston Common as our experimental site for the project, where the multiple sound experiences co-exist, juxtapose, and superimpose. Sounds are categorized into human, non-human(nature), & machines(traffic noises) and visualized through three geometrical prototypes. The spectrum data are extracted from recorded audios and used as an input parameter for transformation of object scale, positions, or vertices.
The project can be further implemented with an AR app, allowing users to explore virtual sound art hidden at the city corners. Furthermore, the project provides a platform to help people with hearing impairment better interact and read the city.
