RELEASE
Visualizing the Release of Movement
This project explores the therapeutic potential of free, unstructured dance movement as a method for releasing tension and facilitating healing. By responding to the prompt of release and letting go, we recorded our own bodies expressing movements of release, falling and moving at various rates of speed. Using Vive motion capture devices, we captured these movements and translated them into a virtual artistic expression, visually representing the process of release and the fluidity of movement in a digital space. This fusion of physical and virtual exploration emphasizes movement as both a healing practice and a dynamic form of artistic expression.
Our team explored different parameters to visualize these motion recordings. After some experimentation, we settled on visualizing the speed of movement during the recording process. The gray-scaling symbolizes the metaphorical process of taking what is heavy (dark) and letting it go (making it light). The duality of pain/pleasure or dark/light in the body are released through movement. The Rhino objects were rendered in Cinema 4D to give the geometry a haunted digital permanence. We view these renders as an alien object, released by the performance of dance, and preserved in virtual space.
